Halloween and other seasonal creative

Many of you have told us that you want seasonal creatives, so that you can remind your visitors about upcoming holidays and keep your site looking fresh and up to date. Well, we've listened and we are currently creating some new banners for you to use in seasonal campaigns. Best of all, once you have integrated them into your site, there's no need to keep going into the eBay Partner Network to change them, as when the event is over, they will automatically update with the new season's theme. For example, if you put a Halloween banner onto your site, we will replace it with a Holiday banner as soon as the event is over. To find these new seasonal banners, visit our Creative Generator and filter by 'seasonal.'

Check out the NEW Halloween banners for this year's spookiest holiday.

Also, why not build this fun list of 2008's top ten selling Halloween costumes into your website and link to the relevant items?

Top Tips for the Holiday Season

Summer is well and truly over for another year (except for our lucky Australian affiliates!) and the Holiday Season is nearly upon us. Remember, November and December are eBay's busiest months as everyone rushes to buy their presents and stock up on festive goodies, so start planning your Holiday campaigns now. Here are some tips:

  • Use our new seasonal banners, which come in a variety of different sizes and designs.
  • Identify this year's "must have" gift and showcase eBay listings of that item using the Editor Kit or our new eBay To Go widget (US only). In 2007, affiliates with sites surfacing Nintendo Wii consoles were incredibly successful.
  • Keep watching our blog for news of our top-selling products and hottest categories.
  • More people are searching online for products at this time of year than any other, so ensure your site is optimized for search engines and you could even consider a Paid Search campaign.
  • The UK and Australia eBay Partner Network teams are getting in the festive spirit and running promotions across the Holiday period. Drive even more traffic to eBay.co.uk and eBay.au and maybe you'll be able to buy a few extra presents for yourself! Tips for Sending Engaged Traffic to eBay Sites

"Engagement" is how we look at a user's experience on eBay once directed via an affiliate link. Among other metrics, we look at the time that users spend on eBay, the number of pages that they view, and their bidding and buying activity after coming through an affiliate link.

Tips to improve engagement:

  • Maximize the amount of unique content to your site.
  • Use more targeted creatives and tools.
  • Integrate eBay links within your content.
  • Optimize your landing pages.
  • Use our geotargeting functionality.
  • Avoid simply incentivizing visits or registration with eBay

Case Study

Since 2007, eBay sellers in the US have been permitted to promote their own products by using an affiliate link on their off-eBay website to direct their visitors to their eBay listings. On September 10th, we changed our terms and conditions to allow eBay sellers in the UK and France to do the same thing, so we thought it would be useful to share with you the story of one our most successful eBay seller affilliates, Trainz.com, who recently won the Professional eBay Sellers' Alliance (PeSA) award for driving the most traffic to eBay.

Trainz.com is an e-commerce website specifically for the model train enthusiast. Started in the late nineties by Scott Griggs, Trainz.com sells about 4,000 collectible and new model trains a month on its own website as well as on eBay. Trainz.com has incorporated links to its eBay inventory all over its website, encouraging visitors to check eBay as well as Trainz.com. They also issue a monthly newsletter, which is used to highlight new and collectible items for sale on its site and on eBay.

Changes to the eBay Site

By now you've probably noticed that in September there were some big changes made to the eBay site. The changes vary by country, but were all made so that eBay continues to be attractive to shoppers. Since the changes it's far easier to list fixed items on eBay, as the up front listing fees have been reduced and the cost shifted to the back end final value fees, which are only payable if you're successful in selling an item. The search functionality has also improved and the Best Match sort order intermingles the most popular fixed price items with the auctions with time ending soonest and also demotes listings from bad sellers. Find out more on the changes in the US, the UK and Germany.
